History of FIBC

As the Eastern Shore resort area grew, Ocean City Baptist Church realized the need for a Baptist church at the northern end of the island.  Their Missions Committee voted to start five new churches at their meeting in May 1981.  The first mission church, Fenwick Island Baptist Mission, was to be located in north Ocean City.  On March 13, 1985, the Committee voted to rent a facility at Route 1 and Carolina Street in Fenwick Island, Delaware.

David Christie was called to serve as the Interim Pastor, and members of Ocean City Baptist Church volunteered to help begin the new mission.  On May 19, 1985, a Commissioning Service was conducted by Walter Agnor for those going to the new Fenwick Island Mission.  On May 26, 1985 the first service at Fenwick Island Baptist Mission was held.

In December 1985, David Christie announced that he was going to California to seminary.  Walter Agnor was called to serve as Interim Pastor.  On March 5, 1986, Reverend Al Brininger was called to be the pastor of Fenwick Island Baptist Mission.

On December 12, 1986, the church purchased the property at Route 54 and Salty Way Drive.  The first services were held on December 28, 1986.  The church had 12 members with a total of 19 in attendance.

In January 1987, clearing began for the new facility.   The foundation was started on April 10, and on June 11, 1987, the first service was held in the new sanctuary.  On January 3, 1988, the Sanctuary was dedicated to the service of the Lord.

In November 2006, Pastor Emeritus Al Brininger announced his retirement. In January 2007, a Pastor Search Committee was formed.  On April 6, 2008, the church voted to call Reverend Mike Fillis to be their Pastor.

On June 8, 2008, Pastor Mike Fillis began his ministry at Fenwick Island Baptist Church.   It is the earnest prayer of the church that God would continue to lead and guide the church as they diligently seek to serve The King of kings and Lord of lords, Jesus Christ.
